Am I a Good Candidate for a Dental Implant?

Am I too old to get a dental implant? Is it really worth it? Given that this is a relatively new option for tooth loss, people still might have many questions about the procedure. The fact is that dental implants are completely safe because this is a well tried and tested procedure. It works best for people who have tooth loss due to an injury, periodontal disease or some other reason.

According to a study published by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, more than 35 million Americans are missing all their teeth in one or both jaws, although only 10% of all US dentists place implants. However, the numbers have been rising in recent times, with increasing awareness of the procedure.

Theory of Dental Implant

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. The metal posts or frames are usually made of a biocompatible material, titanium, which is surgically positioned into the jawbone, beneath the gums. While healing, the titanium post gets fixed in its place and dentist can then mount replacement teeth onto these posts. According to the team at Revitalizing Smiles, the main reason for using titanium posts is that it is the closest to natural tooth roots.

If you are afraid that such teeth might shift while speaking or eating, you should know that implants are fused to your jawbone, hence provides a stable support for artificial teeth, unlike the traditional dentures.

How Do You Know You are a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are effective for all age groups and heal with the same predictability for older patients as they do for younger ones. It is the next big thing towards healthy, natural teeth that are built to last. If you are someone who takes pride in their general and oral health, you are an ideal candidate for dental implants. However, people suffering from diabetes, heart diseases and those who have undergone radiation therapy are evaluated on an individual basis, according to WebMD.

Implant placements require minor surgery and since wounds take longer to heal for diabetics, due to damaged small blood vessels (capillaries) caused by high glucose levels, it is advisable to stay in constant touch with your dentist and physician through the healing process.

Lastly, you should know that these implants do not hurt and are a lot easier than having your tooth extracted. However, if the patient is nervous or the case is complicated, the dentist might recommend a sedative. Dental implants may appear expensive at first, but with those beautiful teeth, they are totally worth their price.
